Blue Cross extends
co-pay waiver for generic drugs
06 June, 2006
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North
Carolina said it would extend its co-pay waiver program
for generic prescriptions for its members through the
end of the year.
The program waives co-pays for members who choose generic
drugs when filling their prescriptions. Generics
are typically 30 percent to 70 percent cheaper than
their name-brand equivalents, according to a Blue Cross
and Blue Shield news release.
The company first tried waiving co-pays on generics
in 2004 in an effort to boost their use. This year,
the co-pay waiver began Feb. 1 and was scheduled to
expire at the end of July.
The company said that members saved about $20 million
in co-pays from February through April of this year.
The waiver will not apply to every Blue Cross and Blue
Shield customer. Members of the State Health Plan and
the Federal Employee Program, as well as people who
have purchased Medicare prescription drug policies through
Blue Cross and Blue Shield, aren't eligible.
Blue Cross and Blue Shield is the biggest provider of
health insurance and managed care services in the state.
