A
clinic initiated by UTMB for the treatment of sexual
dysfunction
16 November, 2005
More than 50 percent of men between
the ages of 40 and 70 experience sexual or erectile
dysfunction (ED) at some point of time in their
life. ED is caused by vascular conditions in more than
80 percent of all cases. ED can be devastating to a
man and his partner and it is often linked to other
life threatening problems like heart disease.
Physicians at the University of Texas Medical Branch
(UTMB) at Galveston are working to reverse the stigma
of erectile dysfunction and treat the problem through
a new program called the UTMB Multidisciplinary Clinic
for Sexual
Health. The clinic provides a first-visit cardiac,
cardiovascular and sexual
dysfunction evaluation for high-risk patients with
a history of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart failure
or other types of heart disease.
After the first assessment, the patient is referred
to a specialist. Physicians in the clinic specialize
in cardiology, urology, psychiatry, vascular surgery
and endocrinology. Each treatment plan is designed specifically
to treat the patient’s combined needs for providing
maximum benefit to them.
