Cost
benefit of generic drugs
14 November, 2005
Usage of generic can save a reasonable
amount of money. A new study has found that U.S. consumers
could have saved $20 billion in 2004 and even more during
this and future years, by using more generic
drugs. Patients need to ask if there is a cheaper
medication for their therapy as generic drugs can provide
equal benefits at a cheaper rate.
Generic drugs used to treat common conditions such
as stomach ulcers, inflammation, depression, erectile
dysfunction, high blood pressure and high cholesterol
are in big demand nowadays. The most dramatic savings
potential exists for gastrointestinals, with the generic
forms making up 31 percent of such prescriptions nationwide.
In the anti-cholesterol category, generics are only
dispensed 7 percent of the time.
