Poor countries forecast relief as WHO adds seven Generic
drugs to its list
22 August, 2005
Ranbaxy’s seven anti AIDS drugs
have found place in the WHO’s prequalification
list for use in poor countries. Three anti AIDS drugs
by Aurobindo Pharma has also been successfully added
to the list.
Last year three Ranbaxy generic
drugs were dropped due to its lack of quality and
safety in manufacturing drugs. According to latest WHO
tests, the Ranbaxy products and laboratories have been
found to be satisfactory. The whole purpose of prequalification
list is to make it simpler for countries to determine
which drugs to buy when they are planning anti AIDS
program. For countries badly hit by AIDS epidemic, access
to life prolonging drugs is a major benefit. This approval
brings the WHO prequalification list to 63 out of which
nearly half are generic drugs.
