Vending
Machine offers free Generic Drugs
03 January, 2006
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Rhode
Island is offering doctors a photocopier-sized vending
machine to dispense generic
drugs.
Blue Cross officials say they want Rhode Island doctors
to have access to free samples of generic drugs when
they prescribe medication. Brand-name drug companies
have offered samples of their more-expensive medications
for years.
Doctor Stephen Scott of Johnston says he sometimes prescribed
patients a more expensive brand-name drug because he
could offer a free sample. Now doctors in Scott's practice
can walk to the machine and scan a patient's medical
records. Seconds later, the machine dispenses a free
sample. Blue Cross officials are trying to boost the
number of subscribers who use generic drugs.
