Indian generic drugs attracting new buyers: Govt

10 November, 2006

The government has said Indian generic drugs are attracting buyers from Australia, Korea and Japan as they are compliant with the latest quality norms.

Indian companies are attracting new buyers because "they adopt the latest quality norms", Department of Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Joint Secretary G S Sandhu said while addressing a FICCI summit India Chem 2006 here today.

Generic drugs constitute 24 per cent of pharma exports from India and in the last six years, the generic industry is growing at the rate of more than 20 per cent, he said.

Most of India''s export of generic drugs is to the US and Europe.

Today, India has the largest number of factories with USFDA approvals outside the US, Sandhu informed. About 100 Indian pharma factories have USFDA approval, he added.
