Pfizer Plans To Launch More Generic Drugs in India
11 September, 2009
Drug maker Pfizer Ltd ( manufacturers of popular drug Viagra) plans to launch two or three generic drugs in India by December as part of its efforts to widen its portfolio and market share, its managing director said late on Friday. The Indian arm of the world's top drug maker Pfizer Inc, has already launched anti-hypertensive telmisartan last month, Kewal Handa told reporters on the sidelines of an awards ceremony.
"We wanted to re-look at our portfolio. We wanted to enlarge our portfolio," he said. "We are launching this as a part of our increasing product portfolio and market expansion strategy." This is in line with the company's global strategy to boost growth through generic drugs rather than patented ones.
As part of its effors to boost growth in the generics and emerging market, Pfizer Inc, earlier in May, struck licensing agreements with two domestic generic drug makers, Aurobindo Pharma Ltd and unlisted Claris Lifesciences for some of their off-patent drugs. Pfizer's India unit will also outsource the manufacturing of these products, Handa said, declining to give revenue expectations or name these products. |
