Dapoxetine
Dapoxetine is the first drug undergoing FDA review for premature ejaculation problem. If approved, it would be the first prescription treatment targeted specifically to treat PE and will be marketed in the U.S. by Ortho-McNeil Pharmaceutical, Inc.
Dapoxetine clinical study results showed the drug helped men suffering from premature ejaculation lengthen intercourse three to four times. This drug also increased their staying power with the first dose and helped maintain the increases over the whole study period. Dapoxetine treatment is not without side effects , however. These included:
- Nausea in 8.7 percent of men getting low-dose and 20.1 percent of men getting high-dose dapoxetine.
- Headache in 5.9 percent of men getting low-dose and 6.8 percent of men getting high-dose dapoxetine.
- Diarrhea in 6.8 percent of men getting high-dose dapoxetine.
- Dizziness in 6.2 percent of men getting high-dose dapoxetine.
Premature ejaculation is defined as persistent or recurrent ejaculation with minimal sexual stimulation before, upon, or shortly after penetration. This condition is traditionally diagnosed when sperm release occurs two minutes or less into the sexual act, or even before penetration.
"Premature ejaculation is a frequent and distinct medical condition that can severely impact quality of life, affecting the physical and emotional well-being of patients and their partners," says James H. Barada, M.D., urologist at the Center for Male Sexual Health, Albany , NY , and board member of the Sexual Medicine Society of North America (SMSNA).
